Biography

Dr. Kan is a licensed psychologist in California and New York. She was born and raised in Hong Kong. She is trilingual in English, Cantonese, and Mandarin. Dr. Kan first received her Bachelor's degree from Washington University in Saint Louis, MO, with a double major in Psychology and Educational Studies. She then earned a Master of Science from the Graduate School of Education at the University of Pennsylvania, specializing in Psychological Services. She was a licensed mental health counselor (LMHC) and received training in play therapy and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR). She worked in various settings on the East Coast for over a decade before returning to school in 2014. 


Dr. Kan graduated from Alliant International University in 2019 with a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Clinical Psychology. During her doctoral training, she held a research externship position at the Foster Care Mental Health Program in the San Francisco Department of Public Health. She also completed three clinical practicum at the Oakland Psychological Services, Kaiser Permanente Oakland (focusing on the assessment and treatment of Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and Autism Spectrum Disorder in children), and San Francisco Neuropsychology (focusing on neuropsychological evaluations in children and adults). Dr. Kan then completed an APA-accredited predoctoral internship at the California Medical Facility, a psychiatric inpatient program within the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. Lastly, she completed an APA-accredited postdoctoral residency at Kaiser Permanente, Pleasanton, where she served children and youths in the Department of Child and Family Psychiatry and adults in the Department of Adult Psychiatry. Throughout her doctoral training, Dr. Kan focused heavily on psychological and neuropsychological assessments in adults and children. She obtained her psychology license toward the end of her postdoctoral training and started a private practice amid the pandemic.


Overall, Dr. Kan held clinical, research, and teaching positions in universities, primary care clinics, community-based mental health programs, substance abuse treatment centers, and private practices in Massachusetts, New York, Connecticut, and California. Currently, in her private practice, she offers psychotherapy, psychological evaluations, and consultations to children, adults, and families in California and New York. Her specialties include immigrant mental health, psychological testing and assessment, childhood or relational trauma, parenting issues, life transitions, and neurodiversity. In addition to her private practice, she is a psychologist at the Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford, providing neurodevelopmental evaluations to pediatric patients in the Single Ventricle Program. She also serves as an adjunct faculty at the Wright Institute and a collaborative supervisor in the College Wellness Program.
